Mission and Background:

The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of California was established in 1972, and is dedicated to the defense of indigent clients charged with federal offenses.  The Federal Defender is authorized and funded pursuant to the Criminal Justice Act, ("CJA") 18 USC § 3006A, et seq. The caseload ranges from petty offenses, to multi-defendant drug conspiracies, sophisticated computer crimes, and international smuggling cases.

The Northern District of California stretches along the coast from Monterey County in the south to the Oregon border in the north. It includes Alameda, Contra Costa, and Napa Counties, as well as the cities of Eureka, Monterey, Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco. Our clients live on fishing boats in the Pacific, come from the inner cities of San Francisco and Oakland, work on the farms of the Salinas Valley, and in the high-tech companies of the Silicon Valley.

This web site is designed to provide information for CJA counsel, and to our clients, their families and friends.
