Oakland Defender Frequently Asked Questions:

  • There are restaurants and coffee shops surrounding the federal building, including the new mall between the BART stop and the federal building.

 

  • No identification is needed to enter the offices of the Federal Defender in Oakland. An ID is required, however, to enter the Oakland Federal Building. There is a metal detector in the entrance to the Oakland Federal Building Courthouse.

 

  • The federal courts are a five minute walk across the street from the Defender Office.

 

  • The Glenn Dyer Jail (also known as "North County Jail") is where many federal inmates are housed.  The jail is a ten minute walk from the Defender's office.

  Public Transportation:
If you are taking BART to the Oakland Federal Building exit City Center and walk towards Clay Street.  When exiting the BART station you should walk through a center of restaurants straight into the federal building. Facing the federal building, turn left (south) on Clay street.  The Office is on the Sixth Floor of the skyscraper across from the federal building on 12th Street and Clay.

Directions from Walnut Creek/Concord (CA-24)
CA-24 west towards Oakland/San Francisco
CA-24 turns into I-980 West toward Downtown Oakland
Take the 18th Street exit towards 14th Street
Stay straight to go onto Brush Street
Turn left onto International Drive/14th Street
Turn right onto Clay Street
The building will be on the right-hand side of the street, on Clay and 12th.

Directions from Hayward/Fremont (I-880 North)
I-880 North
Exit Broadway (right)
Turn left on 12th Street
The building is on the right-hand side of the street, at the intersection of Clay and 12th Streets.

Directions from Pinole/San Pablo (I-80 West)
I-80 West
Take I-580 East towards Alameda/Downtown Oakland/San Jose/Hayward/Stockton
Merge onto I-980 West toward Downtown Oakland
Take the 18th Street exit towards 14th Street
Stay straight to go onto Brush Street
Turn left onto International Drive/14th Street
Turn right onto Clay Street
The building will be on the right-hand side of the street, at the intersection of Clay and 12th Streets.

Directions from San Francisco (I-80 East)
I-80 East - Cross the Bay Bridge
Take I-580 East towards Alameda/Downtown Oakland/San Jose/Hayward/Stockton
Merge onto I-980 West toward Downtown Oakland
Take the 18th Street exit towards 14th Street
Stay straight to go onto Brush Street
Turn left onto International Drive/14th Street
Turn right onto Clay Street
The building will be on the right-hand side of the street, at the intersection of Clay and 12th Streets.

Parking
There is a parking garage directly across the street from the back side of the federal building, on Jefferson Street.  There are also metered parking spots located near and around the federal building.
